ABRAHAM! (Part #2)

“By faith he (Abraham) made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents...” (Heb.11:9 NIV)  It is clear, as you read the account of Abraham in Genesis, that he lived in tents and continually moved around in this land that God had promised would be his. At the time of his wifes (Sarah) death, he had to purchase property for a burial site.  He owned no land.  Yet, he continued there, because of God’s promise that it would someday be his.

“Someone has said, “it is easier to gain than to maintain.”  It is easier to start than to persevere! What a lesson to learn from this man.  It was about 400 years before this promise God was fulfilled.  When Moses and Joshua led the descendants of Abraham to possess this very land. (The overview of God’s actions in fulfilling his promise is found in Ps.105:8-42)  “He (God) remembers his covenant forever...For he remembered his holy promise given to his servant Abraham.”(v8,42)

It is so easy to look at circumstances, people, or personal weaknesses and lose heart or give up.  The Bible tells us that through faith and patience (perseverance) we inherit God’s promises.(Heb.6:12)  There are promises from God, in the Bible, for forgiveness and a true relationship with God. There are promises for guidance, encouragement and strength. Also there are promises for life after death; a new body and a new earth. They are called “exceeding great and precious promises.”

We see through the lives of men like Abraham that God is faithful; he can be trusted to do what he has promised.  Our challenge is to trust this God who cannot lie, and persevere in faith, then we will see these realities fulfill in our lives.
