ABRAHAM! (Part #3) 5-19-2013

”By faith Abraham, even though he was past age--and Sarah herself (his wife) was barren--was enabled to become a father because he (Abraham) considered him (God) faithful who had made the promise.” (Heb.11:11 NIV)  Abraham was promised that his descendants would be as numerous as the sand of the sea. He was promised a son from his own body though he was old, then he was promised this son would come through his wife, Sarah, who was old and barren. (Gen.15:4-5, 17:15-16)

All these promises seemed so outlandish!  An old man would have so many children, through his body that was worn out, and through a wife that was past childbearing age? When Abraham had a son by a much younger woman. he said, in so many words, “let this be the promised son.”(Gen.17:18) God says; No, it going to come the impossible way; through Sarah!

It was hopeless by natural thinking. Yet, Abraham considered God faithful who made the promise. “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations.” (Ro.4:18 NIV)  “And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars of the sky...” (Heb.11:12 NIV)  God made the promises, and Abraham embraced them, continued to believe, and saw them come to pass.

Abraham was human like you and me. Nothing special! Yet he embraced the promises and God fulfilled them.  Such encouragement to you and I.  Through Christ, God calls us to trust him with our lives; let him lead us into his plan.  It will seem impossible at times, but it will be God who accomplishes his will as we trust him. Trust him! Keep following, count God faithful, and see what he will do.
