In Luke 23:32-43 is the incident of the criminals; two men being crucified with Jesus. Along with so many around Christ at that time, one criminal joins the people in mocking Jesus hanging on the cross. However, the other criminal reacted differently. He said “Don’t you fear God..since you are under the same sentence”  We are getting what we deserve.  Note; this man was honestly “coming clean” about his life. We deserve what we are getting!  This man was being truthful about himself.   He didn’t make excuses, blame others. He did not compare himself with others. I am guilty and I need God!.

“But this man (Jesus) has done nothing wrong!” There had been much talk about Jesus. His ministry had been going on for about three years; the miracles he had done, the teaching he had given, and it seem to have intensified in the past week as he entered Jerusalem. I am sure the robber heard these and many other things.  Having him crucified with seemed terribly wrong.

“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” It seem to dawn on him who Jesus is. He may have heard Jesus ask God, as his father, to forgive these who were sneering and reviling him  Now this criminal was asking for mercy from the king in the midst of all this wrong.

Jesus responds: “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”  How quickly the Lord responds to honesty, humility and faith.  In the same way, no matter our situation, God will move to forgive and help us.  Here is a moment of truth that brought an ‘eternity with God” to one who did not deserve it.   This still goes on today!   May we all stop, have our moment of truth and find God’s free gift of eternal life.
