“So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that  you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.”

In the context, the apostle uses a marriage relationship to explain simply what has happened to true Christians and its purpose.  Through Christ’s death, our sins were forgiven and we were freed from self-effort religion. This type of religion is practiced all over the world. You get credit with God through outward religious rules; keeping days, going through rituals, earning points with God, hoping it will please him.

In coming to Christ, we have been set free for religious law (religious self-effort). Why?  That we might be joined to another; Jesus Christ.  In God’s plan, relationship is everything!  We have been called into a close relationship with Jesus, who was raised from the dead.  The apostle uses a marriage relationship to illustrate our calling. A man and woman are legally joined together, and from a intimate relationship, children are born. So as we walk in a relationship with Christ, trusting.seeking and obeying (following) him, we will produce eternal fruit.

How would a wife like it if she awoke every morning to a list of activities to perform that day.  Her husband would then check the list at the end of the day to see if it was finished.  Not much of a life; not much happiness.  Many view their relationship with Christ this way.

The Bible tells us to “abide” in Christ and we will be fruitful.(Jn.15)  This is based on God’s love and faithfulness. This is the relationship to start, develop and maintain, and God says you will be led by him, please him, and be fruitful.  It is a new and better way; really, the only way!         .
