This life is an opportunity to live for the eternal. There will never be another chance like this.. As followers of Christ, we get to choose good over evil. We get to choose serving God over a selfish lifestyle. What an opportunity!.But this opportunity is limited to this present life. In our future life all evil temptations will be gone. We will be completely free from the temptations to do selfish, evil works. Once is all eternity this unique challenge is ours now..

Years ago I read the biography of C.T. Studd. He was a rich Englishman who came to Christ, and led a wonderful missionary movement in Africa. He would come and challenge Christian people in his own country to be committed to living as true believers and for the great cause of Christian missionary work.  I remember one illustration he used. Ships sailing the seas would hoist their flag when they were out to sea, doing their work. If some enemy ship or pirate ship came along and attacked them, they could give up by lowering their flag; showing surrender. Studd would use this illustration in showing our commitment to the Christian life and service..Rather than compromise and lowering our life’s flag in surrender to living a self centered, worldly life: He would tell Christians; “Hoist your flags and Nail your flag to the mast!”  We will never surrender. We are going to serve, work, give and never give up!

Jim Elliot, a missionary to South America, gave his life to carry the gospel to an hostel Indian tribe. He made this famous statement: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” This is the one time in all eternity that we can  choose, though tempted otherwise, to live a life of dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ; the one who loved and died for us, The reward is eternal!
