”Do not eat the bread of a selfish man, or desire his delicacies; For as he thinks within himself, so he is, he says to you, Eat and drink!  But his heart is not with you.” (Pr.23:6-7 NASB)  “Every man’s way is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the hearts.” (Pr.21:2 NASB)

It is so easy to “put on a front;” to mask our real thoughts and attitudes.  We may want  people to think of us in a certain way, and actually it is not true.  The proverb makes it clear that the real person is within; how he is thinking and acting inwardly.  Since God looks on the heart, we never fool him.  He knows us well.

It is uncanny, many times, how we can even fool ourselves.  We can justify our thinking and actions, and convince ourselves that our thoughts and actions are okay. “Every man’s way is right in his own eyes.”

Humility and honesty are so important, and that is why the demonstration of this simple prayer in Ps 139:23-24 is equally important.  It is the prayer of an honest man who has humbled himself before God. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me,  And lead me in the everlasting way”.
It is a good prayer for us all, and God will be faithful to help us in leading us in the everlasting (right) way. Honesty and humility will help us to face the challenge and change our ways.
