“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery, Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”

(Eph.5:18 NIV)  Sometimes we can look for comfort and help in the wrong place. Last week we were encouraged to know that Christ had sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in every true believer to be a reality; a present strength and help to all.

How can we best partake of the Spirit’s life and presence?  He abides in us, but we want to be filled (controlled and motivated) by him. The apostle said, “...for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good pleasure.” (Phil.2:13 NIV)  It is good to read through the New Testament and see how the Holy Spirit worked in the church at the beginning.  He is still working the same today.

Be practical!  Give the Lord some special time, preferably each day. The best time is early morning, in a quiet place so you can open your heart to him. Singing and worship is great! Honor him with praise. (Eph.5:18-20)  Thanksgiving and praise seems to open the way for God’s presence to work in us.(Ps.50:23, Acts 16:25-26) We become more conscience of God as we worship. Hymns and Christian choruses can be a great source of worship. Remember, God desires fellowship, not the perfect singer.  Even when we pray for help from the Lord, we need to mix it with thanksgiving.  God loves us. Give him some time for fellowship and you will find the Spirit of God will begin to guide and work. He is faithful!

Hindrances to this style will come, discouragement may tempt you to give up.  Hang in there! Persevere!  You will see results. God has Promised; “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” (Ja.4:8 NIV)
