If a man or woman living among you, in one of the towns the Lord gives you, is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God in violation of his covenant, and contrary to my command, has worshipped other Gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars of the sky, and this thing has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly.  If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel”...definite judgement should take place. (Deut.17:2-5)  What if they took action on the rumor that some were worshipping other Gods, without finding definite proof,  and they destroyed the town, then later found it was not true what they had heard. What a great tragedy!

Many have heard of the game “gossip”. One, at the beginning of the line, whispers something to the next person. He, in turn. whispers what he heard to the next one, and so on. The person on the end of the line tells what he has heard.  “Almost always it is nothing like that which was originally said. It is easy, without realizing it, to add, subtract, or change what is shared.

This is why God, in his wisdom, tells his people, investigate thoroughly, prove the truth in a matter, before taking any action. The wisdom from God will save us from many hurts and wrong actions. They can cause so much trouble   Be sure before you act!

As we shared last week, it is good that “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life God desires.” (Ja.1:19-20
