The term “born again” has been used in the past few years in speaking of a new emphasis in a group or organization giving them new purpose or direction. Let’s look at what the Bible says about this matter. We hear the designation “born again” Christians. Does that signify anything important?  Is it necessary in God’s sight?

Jesus said, “you must be born again.” (Jn.3:7)  He says you cannot see or enter the kingdom of God unless you are born again. Christ makes it clear that it is not a second natural or fleshly birth, but a birth by the Holy Spirit, Natural (flesh) gives birth to natural life and Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.(Jn.3:3-6)

Jesus explains it another way. In Jn.4, speaking to a woman; “If you knew the gift of God and who is talking to you, you would have asked him and he would give you living water.(V10)  “...whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (V14) The gift of God is given to those who come to Christ, trust him as savior, Not only are our sins forgiven, but we receive a new birth, the very life of God himself, freely, through Christ.  “...the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Ro.6:23)

In November 1956, while in U.S Air Force in Japan. I put my trust in Christ.  Something happened to me. My life was different.  Being a young believer, I had many ups and downs during those first months; On my way back to the United States by ship (12 days). I visited with the Methodist Chaplain. As I shared about decision to trust and follow Christ, He told me I had been “born again.”
