“Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.  There is surely a future hope (expectation) for you, and your hope (expectation) will not be cut off.” (Prov.23:17-18 NIV)  “Know also that wisdom is sweet to your soul; if you find it, there is a future hope (expectation) for you, and your hope (expectation) will not be cut off.” (Pr.24:14 NIV)  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom...” (Pr.9:10 NIV)  “...fools despise wisdom and discipline.” (Pr.1:7 NIV)

In Psalm 73, the writer tells his experience; “my feet almost slipped when I began to envy those who were not following God.”  Every thing seem to be going their way; they seem to be experiencing all kinds of “good” things in their lives.  But then he saw the end of the ungodly, and he realized his thinking and conclusions were wrong.  This understanding comes only as we consider what God says about life and eternity.

Do not envy the ungodly who seem to be prospering, but go and embrace the fear of the Lord.  What is the fear of the Lord?  It is to reverence, stand in awe, of God and his counsel.  Consider diligently who God is and what he says about life, then build your hope or expectation around his promises.  Fools hate wisdom. They are filled with pride; yet true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord.  We are foolish if we don’t humble ourselves and receive his instruction.  Our expectation will be cut off. But in choosing him and his ways, we have an expectation that will endure.

Choose God’s ways and open your heart and thinking to God’s truth.  His word is a “light to our lives.”  Jesus died to free us from our sins and our own ways.  We can now have a true relationship with God.  Stand in awe of this truth: God’s love for us in Christ.  Choose his expectation for you that will last forever.
