FIRST OF ALL - PRAYER! 10-7-2012

“I am writing you these instructions so that...you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household.” (1 Tim.3:14-15 NIV)
“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone.” (1 Tim.2:1 NIV)
“I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing.”
(1 Tim.2:8 NIV)

In his instructions to a younger minister, the apostle makes clear what is the “first thing” in God’s church- prayer!  We should not just give “lip service” to this, but actually practice it; make it a lifestyle.

Why?  Because God wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.  We want God to move in people’s hearts and lives to find real salvation.  The Holy Spirit of God has been sent to convict the world of sin. (Jn.16:8)  We must be “born again” by God’s Spirit to enter the kingdom of God. (Jn.3:5)  He is the one who gives us this new life. (Jn.4:10,14)  He is the one who gives strength to Christ’s followers; to give guidance and courage to obey.(Acts 1:8, 10:19-20)

In beginning a prayer life, it may seem awkward, even unreal.  That is common because we are starting something new.  Just keep at it. Jesus said, “men ought always to pray and not give up”. (Lu.18:1)  There are so many things that endeavor to get in the way: business, cares of life, desires for personal pleasures.  Temporary agendas crowd out the important so many times. That is why being definite and determined is so necessary.  It’s worthwhile when we see the end results.
