If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (Lu.9:23 NIV)  These are the words of Jesus to his disciples and the crowds that followed him.  It seems that his approach to reach people was a “public relations” disaster.  Normally, when you want people to buy into what you are doing, you tell them all the benefits of this position; popularity and riches, etc. The things that appeal for their success in life. Jesus does the opposite.

Actually, there are many great and eternal benefits in following Christ, but that was not his approach.  The way of the kingdom of God is much different then this world would take.  His way is not self-centered.  A call to follow Christ is to open yourself to another’s will and guidance. It is choosing to let God guide your life and to make you what he wants you to be. What is so positive about this is the one whom you will follow loves you with a perfect love and the end of his calling for you will be the best thing for your life.

Look at the person who chooses Christ to guide his life.  Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside the quiet waters, he restores my soul.  He guides in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
