There is a wonderful and important truth in the Bible that helped me so much as I began my Christian life. “He (God) saved us...work out your salvation...now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed.” (Tit.3:5, Phil.2:12, Ro.13:11)  The word salvation is used in the past. present and future tense.  This gives us a grand overview of God’s work for and in us.

Second, the Present tense!  The apostle Paul writes to Christians; “continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.”(Phil.2:12 NIV)  because God is at work in you to desire and to do his good purpose. God begins his work by forgiving and giving us a new life within.  Now, He wants to make us more and more like his perfect son, Jesus!

Jesus set the perfect example. (Phil.2: 5-9)  When he found himself as a man, Jesus humbled himself before God and became obedient.  Jesus chose to allow God’s plans to be fulfilled in his life. Because of this, Christ has been exalted to the highest place. His humility and obedience brought an eternal exaltation. He has this place forever!

As we choose this way, as Christ did, we lay up treasures in heaven, where nothing corrupts and nothing is stolen. (Mt.6:20) So many live only for themselves, but we are called to a higher calling. Jesus said, If anyone follows me, he must deny himself take up his cross and follow me.(Lu.9:23) This is not “long faced religion”, but a positive challenge to live for God.  The result is reaped both now and in eternity.  God’s plans are different for each of us, but the call is the same for all. Work out your salvation! Let’s trust and, therefore, follow him to God’s best for now and forever.
