There is a wonderful and important truth in the Bible that helped me so much as I began my Christian life. “He (God) saved us...work out your salvation...now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed.” (Tit.3:5, Phil.2:12, Ro.13:11)  The word salvation is used in the past. present and future tense.  This gives us a grand overview of God’s work for and in us.

Third: future tense! The apostle says it well; “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” (Ro.8:18 NIV)  Through Christ, we now have the firstfruits (down payment) of the Spirit; a foretaste now!  We are waiting for the adoption as Sons (children), the redemption of our bodies. In hope we wait for this! (Ro.8:19-25)  …”our citizenship is in heaven...we await a savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who...will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”(Phil.3:20-21NIV) “...what is mortal may be swallowed up by life...God has made us for this very purpose and has given us (now) the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” (2 Co.5:4,5)  Wow!  It has not yet taken place, but it is guaranteed by God!!  He made us for this very thing!   We shall be like him.(1 Jn.3:2) Jesus, the first fruits, has a eternal body and when he returns, we shall have the same.

This third aspect of our salvation encourages us to continue living for Christ and his kingdom. It challenges us to be faithful to the one who has begun a good work in us. As the apostle says, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”(2 Co.4:16-17)
