Good News - God Really Loves You! 01-30-11

“But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” (Lu.2:10-11 NIV)  I realize this is not the usual time of the year to quote these verses, but it is such good news, we don’t want to relegate it to the month of December.

With this angelic proclamation and all that followed brought a greater revelation of God to light.  There were types and pictures of the good news in the Old Testament era, but the full understanding did not come out in the open.  God was doing a new thing and he was revealing the wonderful character of God that had been in the shadows.

My view of God prior to my becoming a Christian was that of a perfect being who required the same of me if I expected to have any chance of his favor.  I thought of him as a stern, critical God who was always frowning at me.  I knew I had little or no chance of being accepted by him and going to heaven. I misunderstood God.  I sense many are likeminded.

Something different is revealed by the angel’s declaration.  God is sending us help in spite of the fact we could not help ourselves.  He is sending his Son, Christ Jesus, and he is going to do something that would bring great joy to everyone.  The mercy and love of God for sinful humanity was being revealed.

The good news is God has taken the initiative and sent his Son.  He has reached out and offered us something we can never obtain ourselves.  He will freely forgive our sins, and give us a new spirit (his life) when we turn to his Son, acknowledge our need and receive his Son as our Lord.  All other major religions tell us that we must earn God’s favor, but the good news is “It is freely given to those who believe.”  God really loves you.  It is true!  It can all be yours.
