“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Co.4:17-18)

Trials, hindrances, difficulties, challenges are things that all of us face, and they seem to last a long time. That is why God gives us verses like this one I quoted.  It keeps things in perspective. It is said so well.  They are called “light afflictions” and they last “just for a moment.  Yah! Right!  However, it is true!  In this short life span, something eternal is being accomplished.

James writes so clearly; “Count is all joy when you fall into various trials, KNOWING that the trial is producing patience and something lasting in us. (Ja.1:2-4)  He also tells us: “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life.” The crown is given to those who love Christ.  The proof of our love for the Lord is our steady walk with him even in real difficulty. Better things are ahead!

In this world we easily see the things that are temporary. They are all temporary, yet alluring.  They can lead us astray from the lasting and valuable. The unseen things are eternal. Yet, they can be seen through the truth of the scriptures, to the open and humble heart. We are reminded of this by the Apostle Paul and the half-brother of Christ; James.  Though hard at times, let us take their counsel. It is well worth it for now and eternity. .
