“Praise our God, O peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard; he has preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping.  For you, O God, tested us; you refined us like silver.  You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs.  You have let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and water, but you brought us to a place of abundance.” (Ps.66:8-12 NIV)

Troubles are promised by the Lord Jesus.  We are encouraged to “count it all joy when they come.”  We are told that “whom the Lord loves he chastens.”  “The trial of our faith is precious to God, and proves the genuineness of our faith.” (Jn.16:33, Ja.1:2, Heb.12:6, 1 Pet.1:7)

Two things stand out to me in Ps. 66.  There is the call to heartedly praise the Lord.  Why?

For he preserves our lives in the midst of trouble and keeps us from slipping in our walk with him. “He who watches over you will not slumber.” (Ps.121:3)  The Lord is never caught knapping!  He is always there to encourage, to help, in the most difficult situations.  No matter how the challenges paint themselves; Christ is present.  He never leaves us as orphans. (Jn.14:18)

The other truth that stands out is the end result.  “You brought us to a place of abundance.”

We can always look forward in the midst of the difficulties, challenges and hardships, no matter how severe, there is something great and fulfilling at the end.  Trials are never an end, but a means to a wonderful end for those following Jesus. “All things do work together for good to those who love God and are called according to his purpose.” (Ro.8:28)  The end is sure and good as we follow Christ.
