Meekness - The Important Quality! 5-15-2011

There are all kinds of promises in the Bible to the meek.  God will guide and teach them. (Ps.25:9)  God will beautify them with salvation.(Ps.149:4)  The gospel is preached especially to them.(Is.61:1) “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”(Mt.5:5)  In God’s eyes this is a wonderful quality that merits all kinds of blessings.

Many people, in thinking of meekness, picture one who is weak and timid.  He is viewed in a needy and negative way; not so with God.  Definitions that have been shared with me that seem to speak of meekness from God’s view are “absence of self interest” and “zealous for the interests of God and others.”  Because of this quality of meekness, it sets a person to find God, walk in his ways, and be a blessing to others.

A person who sets his heart to trust God  and let God work in and direct his life, is the one who will receive these wonderful promises fulfilled in his life. Jesus Christ said this: “...I have come down from heaven  not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.” (Jn.6:38 NIV) And again: “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.”  (Jn.17:4)  Jesus said of himself: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart:” (Mt.11:29 KJV)

The apostle Paul tells us: “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” (Phil.2:5 NIV)  He goes on to tell how Christ found himself as a man, humbled himself and became obedient, even to the death of the cross. Because of this God has highly exalted him! (Phil.2:5-11)

This is our Christian calling from God.  This was the heart and way of Christ during his time on earth.  It is not the way of the world, but the way of honor, that will come from God himself and is eternal..
