“One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.” (Ps.27:4 NIV)

This is David, a king, and there is one thing he really wants from God. He is asking God for this, and also seeking it.  So it is not just one prayer he prayed and laid the matter aside.  He was seeking this as the most important thing in his life.  He wanted to dwell in God’s presence, behold his beauty, and petition him in time of need. Notice, he was not just wanting to run to God when needs came.  He wanted more.

I believe this is what is promised by Jesus to all true believers in Jn.14:15-21, and again in Jn.16:13-15.  The Holy Spirit and the Bible will make the things of Christ; who he is and what he wants for our lives, very real to us.  Have you desired this from God?  Why not be like David and seek it.  As we know him better, it brings a greater confidence to serve him in whatever capacity he wants.

Even passing from this life to the next; being with Christ, will lose it’s uncertainty. We get to know him better now and it prepares us for the wonders of his presence in the future.  Now we can dwell in his presence and gaze on his beauty. It is given to us from God as a foretaste and encouragement of the life to come, and renews our strength for the tasks of this life.
