“Do not put out the Spirit’s fire;” (1Th.5:19 NIV)  This was the admonition of the apostle to the church in Thessalonica. Then to a young pastor he says; “...I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” (2 Tim.1:6-7 NIV)

God has given each true believer the gift of his own life; the gift of the Holy Spirit.  Yet, it is so easy to allow the fire, the reality of the Spirit to be quenched. Do not quench that reality!  In fact, be aggressive to fan into flame this wonderful gift.  The nine fruit of the Holy Spirit are given us in Gal.5:22-23.  The power (manifestations) of the Spirit are mentioned in 1Co.12:8-10.  Here is the life of the New Creation that we have as followers of Christ.  True Christianity is not a set of rules to keep, but a new life that we live by the reality of the Holy Spirit.

How do we begin to fan the flame?  Recognize the Spirits presence; Christ is there in you!  Spend some time each day (preferably morning) in worship and thanksgiving; acknowledging what he has given; sing some Christian choruses or hymns that honor God. This is expressing your faith in a real way. Make this a habit; work on it. Also read your Bible daily. You will be encouraged as the things written come alive.  What you are doing is making yourself available to Christ; to encourage you, to show you things he wants you to do. to make himself real to you. You are humbling yourself and trusting, and God has promised to work!
