Jesus says, I am the light of the world.  He that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. (Jn.8:12)  The promise is clear; as we follow Christ there is a reality that encourages us and lights the way.  It is not just rules and religious regulations, but life.

“The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.” (Prov.4:18 NIV)  Here it indicates that to follow the path of God, things get clearer and clearer as we move on.  We start with a little light, but this continues to grow as we walk on in God’s way.

The calling of the first Disciples of Christ in John 1:35-51 gives us some understanding of Christ’s reality to those who follow.  We see Andrew as a disciple of John the Baptist.  When John speaks of Jesus as the Lamb of God, Andrew begins literally following Christ and spends all afternoon with him.  He then goes and finds Simon (Peter), and when Peter meets Jesus he is given a prophetic word about his name change.  As they leave the next day going north of Galilee.  Jesus finds Philip, and calls him to follow.  Philip finds Nathanael and tells him that we have found the Christ of God.  Nathanael comes to Jesus.  Jesus tells everyone that Nathanael to a man that is honest and upright.  He tells him that “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”  (NIV)  This amazes Nathanael and he says that Jesus really is the Son of God.  Then Jesus says “You shall see greater things than that.”  Can you see all the reality of life flowing that confirms Christ to these men?  Also they are promised greater things to come.  As you read on you find they truly see and are a part of the works and reality of Jesus.

A reality relationship is vital as Disciples of Christ.  Without it we have only a drab religion.  As a new year begins, let’s set our goal as a Christian to go for a true reality with him.  Seek the Lord until you have found him; until he is real to you.
