Jesus said, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water...Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (Jn.4:10,14 NIV)

Jesus is offering the reality of eternal life to this person.  Who is it?  A Samaritan woman that has had five husbands and the current man living with her is not her husband.  Yet, Christ is offering her a wonderful, eternal reality with God.  This should encourage us all that the promise of forgiveness of sin and a new life of reality is open to all who respond to the invitation of Christ.  No matter the depth of our failure, God’s gift is ready for you to receive.

Again, Jesus said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.  Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” (Jn.7:37-38 NIV)  What is the setting of this declaration?  He is at a religious feast in the temple.  People were all around him going through the rituals required.  Jesus’ call is to the thirsty; who want more than a religious form or ceremony.  He is telling them of the reality of God they can experience through trusting him.  Sometimes we get tired of routines that have been a part of our lives for months, even years.  Jesus is alive today and still offers assurance of a relationship with God that is real.  It is not by striving and working for acceptance with God, but a gift given freely as we come to Christ.  Again, it is for “Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.” (Rev. 22:17 NIV)  Wow!  This is satisfying!  This is God’s reality!  This is eternal!  This is free!
