“Remember stressed spelled backwards is desserts!”  A number of years ago, my wife and I found a small plaque with these words.  Of course, it was written as a catchy phrase with a good laugh in mind.  Yet, as I have considered it; there is a definite message for Christians in these few words.

Stress is common to all.  It comes in simple or unusual circumstances.  Many times this includes people.  But the Bible puts an unusual spin on this common problem. We are told to “count it all joy when you fall into various trials (stressful situations), knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” (Ja.1:2-3) This produces maturity in our lives.  Stressful situations are working something good (dessert) in us as we patiently trust the one who is with us.

“...we also glory in tribulations (stressful situations), knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character…” (Ro.5:3-4) Good things come out of stressful situations as we trust God who is in control.  There is dessert ahead!

“ for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved through various trials (stressful situations),that the genuineness of your faith...genuineness is tested by fire (stress). may be found to praise, honor and glory at the revelation (coming again) of Jesus Christ.” (1 Pet.1:6-7)  There is wonderful dessert at the end.

This is why it is so important to get into the scriptures often.  They point us to a trustworthy  God and his eternal purposes that He leads us into.  God’s love, faithfulness and patience are constantly revealed to us through the lives and teachings of the Bible.  The same God who worked in Bible days still works today.  He makes the stresses of life into real and eternal desserts. Really!  It is truly worthwhile to trust and follow Christ and his word.
