SURROUNDED BY WITNESSES! (Part #2) 8-11-2013

“Therefore Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses...” (Heb.12:1NIV)  Abel, a son of Adam and Eve, is one of those witnesses. “By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did.  By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings.” (Heb.11:4 NIV)

In the book of Genesis we are told that Abel was a shepherd and Cain, his older brother, was a farmer.  In time they both brought offerings to the Lord.  Cain brought “some of his crops,” and Abel brought “the best of his firstborn lambs.” “The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor.” (Gen 4:3-5 NLT)

Notice, Cain brought “some of the fruits of soil.”  He was a farmer so all he had to offer was produce from the ground. So, he picked up some fruit and brought it to God, while Abel brought the best he had; the fat portions of the First fruits. He brought the best he had!

If we truly believe in the one true God, and that he rewards those who diligently seek him, (Heb.11:6) it follows that we would bring him the best we have  Abel did just that! This example should encourage us to bring our best to God. Give him the first fruits of our life.  Center our living in Christ, trusting and honoring him. Mary poured the precious ointment on Jesus! Many called it wasteful.  Jesus said, “She did what she could; she did a beautiful thing” (Mk 14:3-9)  The challenge is to live our lives for Christ, who has given all for us.  Give him the Best, not the leftovers!  Thanks, Abel, for setting a good example for us.
