Have you ever felt weighed down with personal needs or the needs of others?  That is probably a silly question.  Even in prayer we can so concentrate on the problems that the heaviness continues.  I have been freshly reminded of the verses in Philippians 4:6-7. (NIV)  “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Specifically, I was reminded about thanksgiving!  Praise and thanksgiving to God takes our hearts and minds away from the problems and encourages us to look at God.  He is the one with whom we are talking.  He is the one who is limitless in power.  He is the one who fully understands every situation.  He is the one who has promised to help us in times of need.  He is the one who says to the believer, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”(Heb.13:5)  We then begin to look at the source of help rather then just concentrating on the problem.

Psalms 50:23 encourages us that the offering of thanksgiving opens the way for God to work.  Praise becomes a channel for the blessing and help from God to flow.  Maybe we need guidance, wisdom or strength.  Whatever the need, we are to mix our prayer with thanksgiving and praise.  This is not a gimmick.  He truly is the God of the Bible, who has opened his limitless life and resources through his Son, Jesus.

We are told to “draw near with full assurance of faith.”(Heb.10:22)  Do you need forgiveness and the reality of his presence in your life?  Do you need refreshing in your Christian walk?  Draw near with prayer and thanksgiving in Jesus’ Name.  God will not fail!
