“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders…Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end…the zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.” (Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV)
The first part of this scripture is used often.  We speak much about the child, the son, coming as a baby in a manger, emphasizing the birth of Christ in Bethlehem.  ‘Tis true!  However, the thrust of these verses is about the rule (government) and peace of this one who comes.  The rule and peace will continue to increase and God’s zeal (commitment, emphasis, dedication) will bring it to pass.   Many may deny it, reject it and even fight against it, but God’s determination and power will bring it to pass.  Eventually, Jesus Christ’s reign will be established over all creation. (Eph.1:9-10)

“Therefore God exalted him (Jesus) to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,   and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil.2:9-11 NIV)

It is not only Christ’s authority that is increasing, but also his peace.    The Bible tells us that as we put our trust in Christ and submit to him in faith, that we have “peace with God.”  (Ro.5:1) That which had kept us separated and alienated from God is moved out of the way.  We are forgiven and reconciled to God through Christ.  We have peace with God and can live in the peace of God.

Come!  Now is the time of God’s favor.  He is offering a peaceful entry into Christ’s eternal kingdom and rule.  The way has been made by the king himself when he died on the cross for our transgressions and rebellion.  “Without money, religious works and struggle, we submit to the God’s appointed King.  We can step into a kingdom where the King will always do what is right and just, and will share the blessings of God with us forever.

Here is the way out of a broken, unfulfilling and temporary life, and into a life of reality with a King whom God has ordained.  (Ps. 2) It is the only nation or kingdom that will last forever.
