“This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.” (1 Jn.5:4 NIV)  We probably would immediately say; That’s right if we just have faith, strong faith, we would be strong Christians!  The problem is, and I done it so much, we are looking in the wrong place.  Immediately, we are looking to produce something ourselves. We are looking at the wrong source; our faith.

Years ago, as I was returning from a church service, with my head leaning on the back seat cushion, I heard the Lord speak so plainly to me. “Some people put their faith in their works, some in their faith, but I want you to put your faith in me.” The challenge of the Lord was to turn away from self-effort, and look to him. Put your trust in the one who loves you, who died for you. Trust the one who is faithful to us and has the power to change or help in every situation.

When I would turn to my faith to accomplish something, immediately I would sense my lack.  “If I only had more faith, I would see things happen. I would see God work, etc.” Even in quoting promises in the Bible, I would sense my lack and failure.

The more I have turned to the Lord in difficulties, challenges, etc., the more I would sense peace.  I had my spiritual eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of my faith. I was looking at his power, his faithfulness. His love for me.  He wanted my success and would lead and work out his will in all things.      .

This is the victory that overcomes the temptations, the toughness of the way, the obstacles, all things that hinder. I am, and you are, to trust him! “They who trust him will not be disappointed!” (Ro.9:33 NIV)
