TRIALS OF LIFE! (Part #1) 10-20-2013

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.  Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (Ja.1:2-4 NIV)

To face difficulties with a positive attitude, even with joy, seems ridiculous. However, if we are shown the reason for the trials then we can choose to cooperate and obey.  The trial can produce perseverance.  Don’t give up!  “...run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Heb.12:1b)  Trials give us opportunities to persevere, to develop a lifestyle of steadfastness.  Knowing this, the challenge is to count them wonderful things; something worthwhile, even thanking God for them. “...give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Th.5:18 NIV)

That is all “fine and dandy”, but we usually don’t feel like doing what God says.  We can easily feel discouraged, fearful and even complain. Sounds much like Israel in the desert. (Ex.16:2,8)  This constant grumbling eventually kept them out of God’s promised land.

Look at the wonderful promise that James shares with us about persevering in faith and thanksgiving; “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” (Ja.1:12 NIV)  What pleases God, in difficulties of all kinds, is to trust him which leads to obedience, but when we doubt God’s love and faithfulness in trials; many times this will lead to disobedience.  We don’t trust therefore we don’t follow!  Then we miss out on God’s will and blessing for our lives. God overlooks this in the beginning of our walk with him, but he wants us to learn and go his way, then receive all he has for us.
