WHAT IS VALUABLE? (Part #2) 6-9-13

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.  When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” (Mt.13:44 NIV)

First of all, it seems that this man is not looking for a treasure. He stumbles across it, but in so doing, he sees the great value of what he discovered.  In our society, because the Christian message has been around for many years, there is a tendency to not value God’s offer of an eternal kingdom. It has become just a religion with a certain creed with outward rituals. With this attitude, it is easy to not give it the preeminence that we should.  We put temporary, urgent things in the forefront of our lives and minimize the most important.  What a great mistake.

This man saw the great value of what he found and sold all he had. The temporary things became secondary, and he bought the field including the treasure. What is in the field besides the treasure?  Many things!  Our life span has many temporary challenges, disappointments, and hindrances.  There are situations that arise that we never expected.  However, if we see the value of the treasure that we have found in Christ, we can persevere.  We can overcome cynicism, passiveness, discouragements and temptations. We can trust the one who walked this way before us, and fully overcame; Jesus Christ.  “...for the Joy (treasure) that set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
(Heb.12:2b NIV)  Jesus saw the many who would believe, see the value of the salvation of God, and follow him.  The price he paid was worth the kingdom he would open to all. We can follow his example!
