“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth,. and the truth will set you free.” (Jn.8:32 NIV)  In the context of this verse, Jesus was speaking to believers. “The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.” (Acts 11:26)  In the beginning, people were called Christians because they were trusting and following the teachings of Jesus. As they gained more understanding of what Christ had done for them, it freed them from misunderstandings about God and his work of salvation, They were free to walk more and more in the true way of Christ.

“My sheep listen to my voice: I know them and they follow me.” (Jn.10:27)  First, his people respond to his call and begin to follow. Some people may say they are Christians, but if there is no desire or action to follow Christ, then one wonders whose sheep they are!   Those who turn to Christ are given eternal life and they will never perish. Our calling is to follow and become more and more like the one we follow: Jesus!  We are not leading, but following; even all the days of our lives. Christ does raise up leaders. Yet, notice Paul’s words; “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (!Co.11:1)

On his second missionary journey, Paul was kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching in the province of Asia and then again he was going into Bithynia, but the Lord would not allow it. Instead, he was led to go west into Europe. He was following the Lord, rather than just choosing his way. (Acts 16:6-10)

We are called to a personal relationship with Christ.  He wants to teach us and lead us In his plan for our lives that he purposed before the foundation of the World.
